“MEDITATION NATION: How Transcendental Meditation returned as the new status symbol” –Details magazine

“Movers and shakers are again embracing that seventies mainstay Transcendental Meditation,” according to national magazine DETAILS in its September 2011 issue. ”Power brokers no longer motivate or medicate–they meditate,” writes journalist Joseph Hooper.

“The game-changer, I think, is David Lynch and his foundation,” says Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal, the Georgetown University psychiatry professor who is the author of the recent bestseller Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation.

DETAILS is published by Condé Nast, owner of some of the world’s most prestigious magazines, including The New Yorker, Vogue, and Wired. Mr. Hooper writes that increasing numbers of ”movers and shakers” are learning the Transcendental Meditation technique, which was introduced to the Western world as a ”systematic, stress-reducing, creativity-building technique” by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

The article goes on to describe the experience of Transcendental Meditation: ”[W]hen the mind has been calmed . . . it will effortlessly sink below the level of thought to ‘pure consciousness’ ”—a state of blissful relaxation—”which is the foundation of the health benefits that have been measured in the medical research, much of it funded by the government…. The deep tranquility TM promotes quiets the body’s ‘fight or flight’ stress response, lowering blood pressure and anxiety and combating depression.”

The article mentions several factors that are promoting the upsurge of interest in the Transcendental Meditation program, including the bestseller Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation, and the well-publicized work of the David Lynch Foundation, which ”aims to bring TM to those most in need of its calming effects—at-risk kids, prison inmates, and veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress,” as well as the high-profile individuals who have been talking about the benefits of their TM practice, including comedians Russell Brand and Jerry Seinfeld, and actors Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Heather Graham, and Ben Foster, as well as a growing number of highly successful business leaders and entrepreneurs.
